Why extraction, not a shampoo
A shampoo cleans the top. Extraction pulls dirt out of the pile itself.
Most of the dirt in a carpet isn't sitting on the surface, it's worked down into the pile by foot traffic over months. A shampoo agitates the top layer and leaves a soapy residue behind once it dries, and that residue is sticky, so it actually attracts new dirt faster than an untreated carpet would.
Extraction works the other way: hot water and a cleaning solution are worked into the pile, then pulled straight back out with the dirt suspended in it, rinse and lift rather than scrub and leave. Nothing's left behind to re-soil the carpet within weeks of the clean.

Hold off on heavy traffic
Bare feet are fine once it's dry to the touch, but hold off on shoes or moving furniture back until it's fully dry, to avoid pressing dirt back in.
